USDOT number deactivated? What it means and how to get it back
Why a USDOT number goes inactive, how to check yours in a minute, and the usual way back. Includes how reactivation differs from getting operating authority reinstated.
Facts read against their sources on Oct 25, 2026.
Is my USDOT number active?
A USDOT number goes inactive most often because the biennial MCS-150 update was missed. An inactive number cannot be used to operate. Check yours above: the status line reads Active or Inactive from FMCSA's own census file.
Reactivation and reinstatement are different
- Reactivation restores the USDOT number. It is usually done by submitting an updated MCS-150.
- Reinstatement restores operating authority (the MC number). FMCSA will not take a reinstatement request while the USDOT number is inactive or out of service.
So the order is: reactivate the number, then deal with authority if that also lapsed. If authority was revoked because of insurance, the insurer has to file new proof first.
How long it takes
We could not find an official processing time. Third-party filers describe mail filings as taking weeks and online filings as quicker, but none of that is FMCSA's commitment. Plan for days, not hours.
While you wait
Operating with an inactive number risks civil penalties and roadside problems. Do not move freight on it. Penalty amounts are set in 49 CFR Part 386 Appendix B and change with inflation.
FMCSA has paused deactivation for MCS-150 updates due on or after 1 June 2026. Numbers deactivated before that date are not covered by the pause.
Common questions
Will I keep my USDOT and MC numbers?
Reactivation generally keeps the same numbers. Revocation for a safety audit or an out-of-service order follows a different path.
Can Haul10 reactivate it?
Not today. We can tell you whether it is active and when the update is due; the Pro plan files the MCS-150 update, which is the usual way back.
