Calendar showing the UCR registration deadline for 2027 with the new fee brackets

Every autumn the same thing happens. The UCR registration deadline sits two months away, nobody puts it in a diary, and then it is the week before Christmas. This year there is an extra sting, because the fees went up by about a fifth. Registration for 2027 opened on 1 October 2026. This post covers the deadline, what changed, and a short list that gets the job done in one sitting. Every figure comes from the UCR Plan or the Federal Register.

When is the UCR registration deadline for 2027?

The UCR Plan opened 2027 registration on 1 October 2026. Past registration periods have run to 31 December, with state enforcement starting afterwards. We have not found an official 2027 closing date in the Plan's published pages, so treat 31 December as the working date and check plan.ucr.gov for the confirmed one.

The practical advice is simple. Do not leave the UCR registration deadline to the last week. Card payments are instant, but the cleanup that comes before them (the vehicle count, the company details) is what eats time.

What changed in the 2027 fees

The Federal Register notice of 1 September 2026 (91 FR 56071) set the new brackets. They apply to registrations from 1 October 2026. Every bracket moved by roughly 20 percent.

BracketVehicles2026 fee2027 feeChange
B10 to 2$46$55+19.6%
B23 to 5$138$167+21.0%
B36 to 20$276$333+20.7%
B421 to 100$963$1,163+20.8%
B5101 to 1,000$4,592$5,548+20.8%

For a five-truck carrier that is $29 more than last year. For a 60-truck fleet it is $200 more. Brokers and leasing companies pay the smallest bracket, $55, whatever their size.

What happens if you miss the UCR deadline?

The UCR Plan collects the fee. It does not run roadside enforcement. States do that, and the penalty amounts differ from one state to the next, so we will not quote a single figure. What is the same everywhere is the awkward part: an officer can ask whether you have registered, and without a receipt you are guessing.

No. You are not required to carry any proof of compliance in the vehicle.

That line is easy to misread. It does not mean nobody checks. It means the check happens in a database. Keep the receipt anyway, because a broker, an insurer or an auditor may ask for it months later.

The five-minute check before you pay

Most of the trouble with unified carrier registration comes from one number: your vehicle count. The Plan says changes during the year "will not be reflected until the following year", so the count you report is the one for the fleet you ran, not the one you plan to run.

Before you open the form, check these:

  1. Count the right vehicles. Only self-propelled vehicles at 10,001 pounds or more gross weight rating count. Trailers do not.
  2. Open your MCS-150. If you use the Plan's Auto-Renew, it reuses the power-unit count from there. An old figure means a wrong bracket.
  3. Check the year. From October, you register for next year, not this one.
  4. Check the address. It should say ucr.gov. Lookalike sites charge on top of the fee.

If you are not sure you need to register at all, our short quiz on who has to register for UCR takes a minute.

A worked example

Take a made-up carrier, Alder Freight, which ran five trucks through 2026. Five sits at the top of B2 (3 to 5 vehicles), so its 2027 fee is $167. If Alder buys a sixth truck next spring, nothing changes this year. The Plan says fleet changes during the year are not reflected until the following year. But the 2028 registration would land in B3 at $333, which is $166 more. That is the point to remember. The steps are small, and one truck at the edge can push you over.

For the full table and a calculator, see our UCR renewal guide for 2027. To see how fee per truck behaves across the brackets, read what each truck really costs in UCR fees.

What to do this week

You have two ways to file. You can do it yourself on the Plan's site for the fee in the table and nothing more. Or you can use a filing service, which adds its own charge. Either way, keep the receipt where the next person can find it.

If you would like a reminder before the next one, type your USDOT number into the free checker and it shows your bracket and fee for the year. The common slips are listed in eight UCR filing mistakes that cost fleets money.

Why November beats December

December is crowded. Insurance renewals, fuel tax and year-end bookkeeping all land in the same few weeks, and the UCR registration deadline looks like one more item on the pile. Filing in November has three advantages.

  1. No time pressure on the count. You can check the MCS-150 and fix it first.
  2. Time to fix a failed payment. Cards get declined. Banks flag unusual charges.
  3. One less thing in the holiday week. Your office will thank you.

If you look after several carriers

A dispatch or compliance shop handling a dozen carriers should build a simple tracker. One row per carrier: USDOT number, vehicle count, bracket, fee, date paid, receipt saved.

Fill in the last two columns as you go. A gap in either one is your to-do list.

Frequently asked questions

Is the UCR registration deadline the same as the MCS-150 deadline?

No. The UCR is a yearly fee paid to the UCR Plan. The MCS-150 is a free update to your FMCSA record, due every two years in a month set by your USDOT number. They are filed in different places.

Do I have to register again if I paid for 2026?

Yes. UCR is yearly. A payment for 2026 does not cover 2027.

Who has to register for UCR?

Interstate for-hire carriers, private carriers of property, exempt carriers, freight forwarders, brokers and leasing companies. A carrier that runs only inside one state is generally outside it.

How do I prove I paid?

Keep the receipt the system gives you. The Plan does not issue a certificate to carry in the truck.
